Poached egg on toast

Perfect Poached Eggs!

Preamble

I did go through a phase when I was a vegan. Although I don’t drink milk anymore – soya for the win! – I do eat cheese and eggs.

One of my favourite ways to cook an egg is to poach it. But with all the tactics available to effectively poach an egg, I would actually put it off and end up with an omelette or a fried egg!

However – I have now found a perfect way to poach my eggs with a minimum about of hassle!

Tried them all!

I am not what you would call a master chef, but I have tried a range of ways to get my poached egg perfect for when it is lying on my toast.

When I break the yoIk. I like to see it spread like a golden river over my toast. 🤤🤤

So what gave I tried? I have added vinegar to the water, olive oil, salt, I’ve even swirled the water vigorously before dropping the egg in! The latter has provided some success but then I am so slow in grabbing and breaking the egg that it has usually stopped swirling and the egg just plummets to the bottom of the pan and spreads!

But recently I found a gadget that, with a little help from the internet and a few practice runs, has solved my perfect poached egg problem!

My poached egg pocket!

I bought this silicon poached egg pocket from Amazon and have never looked back!

The process to get the perfect poached egg has taken a few times to perfect, but I am really happy with my current strategy. So please do try it and let me know how it works for you.

1 – Boil the water in the kettle and then add it to the pan. I find about 1/4 full is perfect

2 – Place the silicon pocket in the pan and crack your egg into the pouch.

3 – Turn the heat down so that the water is simmering

4 – Place a lid or cover over the pan and set your timer for 4 minutes

Warning, everything will be hot for the next bit, so be careful!

5 – When the time is up carefully remove the pouch, tipping any water that is on top of the egg back into the pan.

6 – Using a spoon, scoop the perfect poached egg onto your toast!

7 – Enjoy!

Outro

The silicon pouches are reusable and relatively cheap. They are easy to clean and mean you can put on your egg to cook, set the timer and get on with something else until they are ready! If some of the water does go onto the top of the egg, it just means that it gets cooked from the top and the bottom at the same time!

Let me know in the comments how you get on, and what is your favourite way of cooking an egg!
