Module Memories – The Keep on the Borderlands

Do you remember?

What on earth are these posts!? Well, I was clearing out a cupboard which contained a whole load of my AD&D stuff from when I was a teenager! That was not pleasant at all – being a teenager that is, not clearing out the cupboard. Anyway, I found a folder full of old modules and they brought back very fond memories so I thought I would share them with you! Please let me know if you remember any of these modules and whether you played/DM them and what you thought of them. First up – The Keep on the Borderlands!

What I remember?

Now, you need to be warned, I am working from memory here – so there might be false information (my memory is not what it used to be!). I first knew about this module when I bought the Basic D&D box set! It cost me £8.50 and one of the two guys who encouraged me to buy it, removed the module as soon as I opened the box since he would be DMing it. I actually don’t remember playing the module at all! I remember making up 6 characters – including my first ever one a dwarf with a totally original name of Thorin! I do remember DMing the module, well not all of it, just the Caves of Chaos. To be honest, I actually thought the module was called ‘The Caves of Chaos”! Apaprently there was some really good plot elements in the module –

Plot twists include a treacherous priest within the keep, hungry lizardmen in a nearby swamp, and a mad hermit in the wilderness.

but I just remember venturing forth into the caves! I guess this really mirrored the dungeon crawl sessions of the game back then. I don’t remember doing much role-playing at all, it was all just walking around dungeons checking for traps and killing monsters – hoping that we would get enough experience to make 2nd level!

Play again?

I can safely say I have never replayed this module since the first time it graced my gaming table. I do think we have probably changed how we play role-playing games now, but in its day it was great! I seem to remember there was a minotaur or some other high level monster living in one of the caves. This was a real threat to a low level party. Maybe one day some adventurers will travel back to the caves and ‘clear’ them all out. Perhaps I will actually play the whole module! I’m intrigued what the treacherous priest was up to! I did find the module online so it is still available! Anyone fancy reliving the memories? Or is it better just to remember it fondly? Let me know in the comments below.
